A Milestone for Chiropractic: $250K in Funding Approved for Low Back on Track Pilot Program
April 14th, 2025
We are proud to share some exciting news for Alberta’s chiropractic community, and for Albertans living with chronic low back pain.
Alberta Health has approved the Low Back on Track pilot program, providing $250,000 in funding for the 2025/2026 fiscal year. This groundbreaking initiative is more than just a pilot, it’s a transformational step toward a more inclusive, patient-centred healthcare system that recognizes the critical role of chiropractors in musculoskeletal (MSK) care.
What is Low Back on Track?
This pilot program will improve access to publicly funded chiropractic care for Albertans struggling with chronic low back pain. Working in collaboration with Calgary Foothills and Red Deer Primary Care Networks, the initiative will integrate chiropractors into interprofessional healthcare teams while removing financial barriers that often prevent patients from seeking timely care.
By making chiropractic treatment more accessible, especially for underserved or marginalized populations, this program supports better outcomes for patients, and a more efficient, cost-effective healthcare system for everyone.
Why This Matters
Alberta, like many parts of Canada, is facing a physician shortage and increasing pressure on its healthcare system. Chiropractors are well-positioned to step in and support patients with MSK concerns, yet cost remains a barrier for many, particularly seniors and low-income Albertans. This pilot tackles that challenge head-on by providing publicly funded access to specialized care, delivered within primary care settings.
The Low Back on Track pilot will also provide valuable data on:
-
Health outcomes for patients who receive integrated chiropractic care
-
The financial and clinical impact on the broader health system
-
How interprofessional collaboration can reduce strain on emergency departments and general practitioners
A Landmark Moment for the Profession
This funding approval is a powerful signal that Alberta Health sees the value of chiropractic in collaborative, patient-focused care. It reflects years of advocacy and vision for a future where chiropractors are fully integrated into the province’s healthcare landscape.
We are incredibly grateful to Alberta Health and our partners at the PCNs for their support of this forward-thinking program. The Chiropractic Association of Alberta is committed to ensuring its success, and to continuing the push for equitable, accessible MSK care across the province.
Stay tuned for updates as the Low Back on Track pilot rolls out.
